Mastering the Arabic language is Crucial
Mastering the Arabic language is crucial in correctly understanding and relaying the Deen
Some of the scholars in Madinah and from Mauritania mentioned something very important. They said, whoever does not master the Arabic language, then one cannot trust his knowledge.
قالوا: من لم يتقن العربية، فلا يوثق بعلمه
One cannot rely on what he relays of the knowledge of this Deen and trust in what he says. This is because due to his weakness in the Arabic language, we doubt if he correctly understood what he read in the books or what he heard from a scholar. He might be correct regarding what he quoted and relayed, but he might very well be wrong.
From those who said this statement are:
- Shaykh Abdullah ibn Muhammad Al-Ameen Ash-Shanqiti (the scholar of Tafsīr in the Prophet's Masjid)
- Shaykh Abdul-'Aziz Al-Qari (who was previously the dean of the College of Quran in the Islamic University of Madina, and a great scholar of Madina)
- Shaykh Muhammad Al-Ameen ibn Al-Hasan ibn Abdul-Qadir, from Mauritania, a great scholar of the Arabic language and its sciences as well as many other sciences.
This encourages us to work hard in learning and teaching the Arabic language to a level of mastery, so that we can correctly understand and relay the sciences of Islam and what the scholars have written and said. The one who is relaying this sacred knowledge must master the Arabic language. He cannot afford not to.
